Johnathan Martin

Johnathan Martin, is celebrating 25 years of writing music, highways, studios and rock n roll. As guitarist / vocalist / cellist for Piet Botha & Jack Hammer for close to 22 years, in that time, has recorded on 12 Piet Botha & Jack Hammer recordings, and released 3 solo albums ‘In my blood’ , machete and Abomination Blue. In January 2020 the fourth album was recorded at sunset recording studios, titled ‘Into the nebulous night’. A single is released on iTunes and others called ‘ woman and the pouring rain’ , the full album of 10 brand new songs available in full on BandCamp. The artwork is fantastic, it was hand drawn by the talented David Griessel. Recorded in January 2020 just before lockdown at Sunset recording studios, with Jurgen Von Wechmar as Enginner snd co- producer. Tim Lengfeld did the mastering. I was lucky enough to have my long time musical brothers help me out on the recording. Jake Gunn did an incredible job on the piano, playing on all 10 songs!! Harmonica was thrown in by Jake where Piet was meant to play his sections. I was excited to finally have Piet on one of my solo /side projects away from Jack Hammer, but he was too weak in the end from cancer and we lost him too soon. Jorik Pienaar came to the rescue on the drums, making it a reunion of sorts as we both played on ‘n suitcase vol winter in 1997 in the very same studio as 19 year old green horns!!! Wouter Reyneke delivers a bass feel to 5 tracks, and I’am grateful he was available and keen on recording with me, and we did the session live as done by our heroes in the 70’s! Cello and slide guitar was added later as well as vocal harmonies, and Jurgen tested my range constantly. I was amazed at how natural the communication was in studio and it’s what I remember from 22 years ago, and was still present to this day. Some people are just easier to understand and also push you way harder or further than you would normally go. This I love of the sunset studios team. Many people behind the music are to be thanked for believing in us and putting us up over night, or feeding us, and helping with the studio time! These friends are the true heroes and allow us the privilege of doing this work we love !!!! Part of the 25 year celebration, is the availability of all my music online , on all the best platforms. Spotify will soon have my entire discography for streaming or buying . Multi instrumentalist, Johnathan Martin has played cello on most of the albums he’s participated in, but the guitar, acoustic or electric is the main passion. A new addition is ‘AMBER’, hand crafted by Jacobs Lutherie, a special acoustic instrument indeed. Below is my musician Facebook page. You’ll find me doing live shows every Sunday at 3pm South African time! Donations are encouraged at this time of no public performing allowed. Check out my Facebook musician page for details how to contribute or just tune in to a live ‘ lounge session’.
